Job Description

Duties:

Maintain all campus grounds including parking lots, stairs and pathways. Provide day-to-day supervision of regular staff members and seasonal workers. Schedule and/or perform seasonal grounds tasks.

Order, assemble, and repair all snow removal equipment and supplies. Maintain seasonal weather records, keep snow and ice control records, monitor and coordinate other light and heavy-duty snow clearing equipment including contractors.

This position is included in the “operational needs” group (CUPE Article 28.10).

Required Qualifications:

Diploma in Horticulture, or equivalent, from an appropriately accredited institution; or qualified tradesperson status. One to three years related experience.

Experience in grounds development and maintenance of a large facility. Ability to use, provide training and monitor the safe use of a wide variety of equipment.

Excellent working knowledge of irrigation control systems, Latin names of plants, soils, small engine equipment operation maintenance and troubleshooting, current landscape trends, materials and techniques. A working knowledge of construction drawings, local and provincial by-laws, and be able to work with Landscape Architects and other landscape professionals.

Possess good organizational skills and be proficient in computer programs such as MS Office. Experience and certification/training in Forklifts and Bobcat operation. Must be physically fit, as work requires the performance of duties resulting in physical fatigue caused by almost continuous moderate physical activity and intermittent periods of heavy physical activity. Job requires frequent exposure to major undesirable and disagreeable conditions as outdoor tasks are completed in all weather conditions. Safety Footwear (CSA Standard) required. Suitable personal clothing and accessories must be supplied as necessary for the duties and weather conditions. Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island University policy and procedures).

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference given to 3 years minimum union supervisory experience.
